In 1999, dance instructor Shen Tao (Zhao Tao) is loved by two men: laborer Liangzi (Liang Jindong) and wealthy entrepreneur Zhang (Zhang Yi). She chooses to marry Zhang and the couple has a son, whom Zhang names Dollar.
The film, which is split into thirds, then follows the family forward into 2014 as Zhang's pursuit of a Western-style of living separates the family more and more from their past.
By 2025, Dollar is living in Australia and struggling to relearn his mother tongue. He is helped by college professor Mia (Sylvia Chang) who embodies a way of life he has never known.
